OUR AIM


The Energy Center and the associated EPFL's Energy Systems Management Chair intend to foster multidisciplinary research projects and networks to develop sustainable energy production, storage, transportation, distribution and end-use systems and technologies.

OUR ACTIVITIES

- Facilitating and implementing strong interactions between the EPFL scientific community (laboratories and institutes) and the private sector (companies, etc.)

- Positioning our Center as a catalyst and partner in important R&D projects in Switzerland and abroad.

- Promoting high-quality teaching in areas related to energy issues (undergraduate and postgraduate studies, further education).

- Taking an active part in building and implementing energy-related strategies and policies in Switzerland and abroad.

- Implementing communication/information projects regarding energy issues for  specific audiences.

- Disseminating energy-related information for the media

20.11.09: Presentation of a Conference Paper at the 5th Dubrovnik International Conference

The Managment of Network Industries Chair (MIR), The Energy Center and the CREM have recently presented the latest results of the MEU project (Management of urban energy systems) during the 5th Dubrovnik International Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems, Sept. 29th - Oct.3rd 2009, Dubrovnik, Croatia

16.11.09: A new innovative partnership between EOS Holding and the EPFL


EOS Holding - whose five shareholders are Romande Energie, Services Industriels de Genève, Groupe E, Services Industriels de Lausanne and FMV - and the EPFL have signed two important agreements:

- Creation of a teaching and research EOS Holding Chair entitled "Distributed Power Systems." This Chair will be integrated to EPFL's School of Engineering. It will get a sponsorship of 1 million Swiss Francs over the next five years, that can be extended.

- Framework agreement to create an excellence center in the field of energy storage. A wide spectrum of research projects will be sponsored within the various EPFL Laboratories, whose expertise includes the various facets in energy storage. The activities under the aegis of this new excellence center will be coordinated by the Energy Center.It will get a sponsorship of 1 million Swiss Francs over the next five years, that can be extended.

09.11.09: The future of solar energy in Switzerland lies in Asia

For Mr. Hans-Björn Püttgen, Professor CGSE and Director of the EPFL's Energy Center, the future of solar energy in Switzerland lies in Asia, as documented in the Swiss daily newspaper "24 Heures".

06.10.09: News from the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels (RSB)
 
The RSB is about to finalise the "Version One" of the first generic sustainability standard for biofuel production. It builds on the last 2.5 years of discussions held around the world with hundreds of stakeholders from various sectors (NGOs, oil companies, Universities, governments, etc.) and more than fourty countries.  The requirements for biofuel producers are divided into twelve broad principles, which encompass issues like deforestation, food security and workers  rights.  The RSB initiated the establishment of a  certification system. Biofuel producers  will be able to prove that they comply with the sustainability requirements through a formal process.

08.09.09: Club Ravel 2009: the Energy Center will present a conference!


On December 1st, within the Club Ravel 2009 in Lausanne, Dr. Massimilano Capezzali , Deputy to the Director (Energy Center-EPFL) and Mr. Gaëtan Cherix, Director (CREM) will deliver a conference: "Urban Energy Management: Efficiency On A Large Scale!"
